Enhancement of Audio Recordings

Often, important evidence is contained on audio recordings that are of marginal quality or words. Our analysts perform forensic enhancement of the following types of recordings:

  • 911 emergency calls to enhancement of foreground and background speech
  • Enhancement of marginally intelligible speech from body wire recordings
  • Enhancement of recorded Interviews, both overt and covert
  • Enhancement of other Covert recordings
  • Enhancement Voicemails

Spectrogram, Audio and Voice Forensic Analysis Comparison AuthenticityCommon problems that occur on forensic audio recordings include those listed below:

  • The voice is too faint to be heard intelligibly.
  • One voice is audible, but the other voice is faint.
  • There is background noise impairing the intelligibility of those speaking.
  • The voices are masked by hiss, hums or tape noise.
  • 911 tapes have important talking in the background that cannot be heard clearly.
  • The speed of the recording is too fast, too slow or fluctuates.
  • Due to recording problems or poor acoustics, the voice is less intelligible than desired.
  • The tape has an echo, making the voice less than intelligible.

Enhancement is done through computerized, digital audio enhancement technology. Analog recordings are played using a broadcast quality recorder, and captured to the hard drive of a laboratory computer. Then, using the appropriate processes, improvements are made which can:

  • Increase the volume of faint or quiet voices.
  • Improve the intelligibility of speech.
  • Remove or enhance background voices to make them more audible and intelligible.
  • Reduce or remove tape noise, hisses and hums.
  • Isolate voices from noisy backgrounds.
  • Decrease or remove the echo.
  • Correct tape speed problems.

Once the audio enhancement is complete, the results are placed on a CD, unless magnetic audio tape is requested. The optimal listening quality is from a CD, due to the fact that it is in digital form. Audio tapes can be used for preparation of transcripts if desired.

Important Note: If the recording is on an analog tape, such a standard audio tape or microcassette tape, it is important to provide the most original copy to be enhanced. The actual original will provide the best outcome, but if it isn’t available, a good, first generation copy should be used. Each time a tape is copied there is greater loss of quality with each subsequent copy.

Enhancement of Digital Audio Recordings

Enhancement of digital recording is also performed, but since they are in digital format, which isn’t degraded in the copying process, a copy will usually suffice.

As experienced expert analysts, our highly trained and qualified forensics team uses top of the line hardware and software technology to carefully handle and thoroughly analyze your evidence audio, video, and photographic media. We can isolate, separate, enhance, and authenticate all relevant aspects of audio and video recordings in order to produce expert evidence backed by many years of master experience. As an expert witness in the courtroom, our testimony from the witness stand will contain provable facts and relevant demonstrative evidence that can often make or break a case.
