Forensic Transcription

Forensic Transcription is the scientific process of determining the words spoken on a recording that is of marginal quality. It is conducted in the lab by an analyst using forensic computer software. Taught by the Center for Speech Technology in St. Petersburg Russia, is it known as “text decoding” in the Russian legal system. It involves the following procedures.

  • The use of Forensic audio software or high end audio editing software is required.
  • The recording is fed into computer using a noise canceling digital sound card.
  • A high quality digital sound card is also utilized for listening.
  • Listening and review is done under optimal conditions directly from computers digital sound file.
  • High quality headphones or in ear speakers are used for listening.
  • Waveform analysis is used to locate, identify and evaluate areas of speech and words in question.
  • It requires focus and concentration by the forensic analyst.
  • First the entire relevant portion is reviewed for understanding of subject matter.
  • Then, consecutive listening and evaluation is performed, focusing on one small segment at a time consisting of only a few words.
  • The words are analyzed for syllables, letters and word combinations.
  • Using forensic audio filtering the speech is listened to at different speeds and at different gain (amplification) levels.
  • Forensic features of the software are utilized that stretch the words while keeping the pitch the same. This allows for analysis of syllables and individual letters, such as what letter a word ends with, etc.
  • The material is listened to through various filters designed to improve intelligibility by enhancing the frequencies that make up the voice.
  • The words are reviewed for context of what's occurring in the recording.
